NO arrests have been made by police who are investigating a funeral director for alleged fraud offences.

R&H Baker in Harcourt Road, Wantage, and Wantage Road, Didcot were searched by Thames Valley Police on Sunday (April 14) after concerns were raised a few days prior.

The concerns raised relate to the alleged prevention of a lawful and decent burial but the investigation is in relation to only ‘one individual only’.

A Thames Valley Police spokesperson said: “We carried out a number of immediate enquiries, and two warrants were carried out.

“As a result of these warrants, we are now working together with partners including Environmental Health, to investigate business practices at the sites.

“Our focus is on fraud offences and one offence of prevention of a lawful and decent burial. At this stage of the investigation, we have found no evidence of any criminal offence and no arrests have been made.

“We know this will be of concern to families and individuals who have used this business however we can confirm our enquiries into the prevention of a lawful and decent burial relates to one individual only, and we are working to contact their next of kin.

“We do not believe that any other families are impacted.

“While the investigation is ongoing the funeral directors are unable to carry out any business. We've contacted the two families who were due to use the funeral services and are supporting them.”

The Oxford Mail has asked R&H Baker for a comment.
